The U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced Monday that UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad has been named as one of eight standout freshmen finalists for the 2013 Integris Wayman Tisdale Award.

Muhammad, a Las Vegas-native, leads UCLA and ranks second in the Pac-12 Conference in scoring, having averaged 18.3 points per game. Additionally, he leads the nation among freshman scorers.

The 6-foot-6 forward faces competition, however. He joins a list that also features freshmen Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Jahii Carson (Arizona State), Gary Harris (Michigan State), Ben McLemore (Kansas), Nerlens Noel (Kentucky), Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke).
