If you are familiar with the Scary Movie series, you know exactly what you are going to get with Scary Movie 5.  Without a doubt, this film delivers.

The plot is a ridiculous excuse to fit jokes in, but you just won’t care. You don’t see a movie like this for the subtle nuances of a well-written story; you see a film like this to laugh.

Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan start things off by making fun of themselves as well as anything else in the opening scene. It sets the tone and lets you know that it’s okay to laugh. Everyone is in on the joke.

Simon Rex is back in the mix, steering you through the flick with Ashley Tisdale by his side. Together they are trying to look after a couple of kids and a baby, and it only serves to add reasons for inappropriate humor.  (“Did that little girl just say that?”) There are many fun cameos all over the place and big folks in small supporting roles such as Heather Locklear, Snoop Dogg and Molly Shannon.

What is impressive is that you will get the jokes even if you haven’t seen the films that are being made fun of. My knowledge of more than a couple of the flicks was really just what I could glean from the commercials, but it was still funny to me, and I still laughed. If you are the non-horror movie type but have a friend that loves them, this might be a great compromise for movie night.

The DVD extras aren’t there. One, small sampling of “deleted and extended scenes” is all that is offered, and the scenes are honestly just not very funny out of context and not worth your time.

Scary Movie fans will enjoy this, though maybe not as much as some of the earlier sequels. If you want to laugh and not think about anything else for about 86 minutes, Scary Movie 5 might be a good choice to add to your rotation.
