On Monday, Grammy award-winning singer and musician John Legend delivered a heartfelt speech to the University of Pennsylvania's graduating class, revealing aspects of his early family life that included death and drugs, but also love and music.

Legend, who graduated from the university in 1999 and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from UPenn this year, told graduates to "go all in" and approach professional and personal pursuits with passion.

The singer started his speech joking, explaining the pop music industry prefers to only play 10 songs the public likes "over and over again" and that now his song ("All of Me") has become one of the "top 10."

"Now all of you, are so over me/Tired of hearing that I went to Penn, why they bring him back again?" Legend jokingly sang.

He later went on to convey one very important message all graduates should keep in mind: "The key to success and happiness is opening your heart to love, spending the time doing the things you love and with people you love."
