Recently, the Common Core standards, which are meant to better prepare students for higher education, have been implemented in America’s primary and secondary schools. However, colleges and universities are behind on employing these standards into their curriculum.

The Common Core is a general set of standards that classes K-12 are meant to use as a guideline to prepare students for college, but a new report from the New America Foundation suggests that colleges aren’t aligning their instruction and teacher preparation programs with the Common Core standards.

“Many of those within higher education were not involved in developing or endorsing the Common Core standards and assessments, and have not considered how they might change their own practices to align with this K-12 initiative,” the report states. “Indeed, many are not even aware of the Common Core.”

Although the Common Core is meant to prepare students to succeed in college, the report found that “there are few coherent approaches being used to join these two systems into a rational shared commitment to the Common Core.”

According to the Huffington Post, 43 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core.
