Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, Timothée Chalamet and Naomi Osaka named co-chairs of next Met Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has racked up some serious star power for the return of its annual gala.

Musician Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman, actor Timothée Chalamet and tennis star Naomi Osaka are set to co-chair New York’s fashion fete of the year when the Met Gala returns in September, the institution announced Monday.

Honorary chairs for the evening will be designer Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

“Met Gala here we come. Honored to co-host alongside giants,” Gorman, who electrified the world with her poetry at President Biden’s inauguration, said on Facebook and Instagram Monday.

Chalamet, who earned an Oscar nomination for his breakthrough role in “Call Me by Your Name,” shared his own Instagram post Monday that garnered more than 2 million likes with its ensemble of images showing the famed Met steps and his co-chairs.

He also shared a viral meme that allegedly shows singer Jason Derulo tumbling down the Met Gala steps several years ago. In reality, it depicts neither Derulo, who didn’t even attend the gala, nor the Met, hinting Chalamet plans to approach this year’s glamorous gathering with some wit.

He wouldn’t be the first. For 2018′s “Heavenly Bodies” ball, Rihanna dressed as high-fashion Pope while Zendaya went as Joan of Arc in a custom Versace gown that looked like gleaming armor.

Last year’s Met Gala was set to be co-chaired by Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emma Stone, but it was postponed and ultimately canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Known for its star-studded red carpet, abstract themes and outlandish fashions, the Met Gala provides the primary source of annual funding for the Met’s Costume Institute.

The over-the-top event usually takes place the first Monday in May, but this year’s “more intimate” affair is scheduled for Sept. 13, “pending government guidelines,” the Met said Monday.

It will be followed by a larger gala scheduled for May 2, 2022. Both will launch related pieces of a retrospective of American fashion.

“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will open Sept. 18 and “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion” as it celebrates the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary, the museum said.

Melina Matsoukas, who directed the 2019 Lena Waithe film “Queen & Slim,” has been commissioned to create an “open-ended film to project in the galleries” with content that “will evolve over the course of the exhibition,” the Met said.

Part two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will open May 5, 2022, in collaboration with the museum’s American Wing. It will feature historical and contemporary dress dating from the 18th century using period vignettes and settings such as a “Shaker Retiring Room,” the museum said.

“Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs, and events that shape our lives,” Max Hollein, the Marina Kellen French Director of The Met, said in a statement. “This two-part exhibition will consider how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America.”

The 2019 Met Gala’s celebrity co-chairs were Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams. The year before that, Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace held the titles.

Each year’s chairs are selected by Wintour, who has helmed the gala since 1995.
