The Skirball Cultural Center is hosting a screening and Q&A for Breaking Bread on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 PM. Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel, the first Muslim Arab to win MasterChef Israel, is on a quest to make social change through food. Watch her journey unfold in Breaking Bread, an uplifting documentary following Atamna-Ismaeel’s bridge-building A-Sham Arabic Food Festival.

At A-Sham, pairs of Jewish and Arab chefs collaborate on mouthwatering dishes like kishek (a Syrian yogurt soup) and qatayef (a dessert typically eaten during Ramadan). In making food together, these chefs are also making a case for community and connection.

Through food, Breaking Bread illustrates what happens when we focus on the person, rather than their religion; on the public, rather than on politics. Directed by Beth Elise Hawk.

The post-screening conversation with the filmmakers will also include sample varieties of LA-Based Social Hummus on your way out.
