UCLA & USC IN WOMEN’S SOCCER PRESEASON POLL

The NSCAA/Adidas preseason rankings tabbed UCLA at No. 3 behind No. 1 and defending national champions North Carolina and No. 2 Notre Dame. USC came into the poll at No. 24.

North Carolina will be looking for its 19th national championship in the 25-year history of the tournament, while UCLA and USC will be gunning for each school’s first national championship in the sport.

LOS ANGELES RATED THIRD BEST FOR SINGLES

The median age of first marriage for people is rising, and singles make up 41 percent of the adult population. If you find yourself in that group, then you live in one of the right places.

Forbes rated the 40 largest cities in the country on culture, nightlife, job growth, cost of living alone, online dating, the number of other singles and that ever-elusive quality: cool. Joining Los Angeles in the top five were San Francisco (No. 1), New York (No. 2), Atlanta (No. 4) and Chicago (No. 5).

FINANCIAL AID SCAM COMPLAINTS RISE

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) saw a 60 percent increase in the number of complaints in the past year. CNN Money listed some possible red flags to look for when you’re researching financial aid: You should be wary of offers that don’t include phone numbers or have time pressures; legitimate scholarship foundations will notify you by mail, not by phone and will never require payment of any kind; you receive a “scholarship” for which you never applied; any company that promises to do “all the work.”

If you have questions or doubts when doing research, be sure to consult your school or the BBB to keep from getting scammed yourself.
