“At the Death House Door” is told from the perspective of Pastor Carroll Pickett, who served 15 years as the death house chaplain to the Walls prison unit in Hunstville, Texas. Although a blatant indignation of the death penalty and its occasional propensity to execute the innocent, the film is a personal and intimate look at capital punishment in the state of Texas.

Co-directed by Steve James and Peter Gilbert (Hoop Dreams), the film also focuses on the story of Carlos De Luna, a convict Pickett counseled for many years leading up to his untimely execution. Pickett is meticulous in describing the over 95 executions he had the displeasure in residing over and his vivid images can be at times sobering.
