Frank Miller teams with artist Jim Lee (Batman: Hush) for this take on Robin’s origin story. But it’s Miller’s treatment of Batman that inspired controversy.

In typical Miller fashion, Gotham is a cesspool of corruption. In response, Batman is basically a fascist and a manic sociopath. He rips on the Justice League, tells Robin repeatedly to shut up and even hits him. Unlike in The Dark Knight Returns, however, Miller’s act feels a bit forced this time around.

It’s really Jim Lee’s artwork that makes this. Every page pops with dynamic and original panels that breathe fresh life into Gotham and render Miller’s over the top hard-boiled narration believable. It’s among the best superhero artwork around.
