Apparently Phish bassist Mike Gordon has kept busy during the band’s hiatus writing his second solo album, The Green Sparrow. Unfortunately, I found this effort to be a major disappointment on many levels.

It’s bad enough that Gordon does not have much vocal range or strength, or melody for that matter, but even worse is that the songs are boring and the lyrics are weird. Maybe creepy is a better word for some lyrics, like on “Andelmans’ Yard,” where Gordon sings about digging tunnels under his neighbors’ property.

If you are a Phish fan you may get this album, and enjoy the fact that fellow Phishes, Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio, make guest appearances. Anastasio has a featured solo on “Dig Further Down.”
