WHO’S HOT?

USC Running Backs

Trojan tailbacks Broderick Green (18 carries, 121 yards, two touchdowns), C.J. Gable (16 carries, 109 yards, three touchdowns) and Stafon Johnson (11 carries, 112 yards) each carried the day for USC in its 69-0 rout over Washington State in Pullman, Wash., on Saturday.

Mark Sanchez

The USC quarterback also had a field day against Washington State (1-7, 0-5), completing 15 of 20 passes for 253 yards in the first half alone.

National Title Hopes For USC

With its shutout victory over Washington State, USC improved to 5-1 overall (3-1 in PAC-10). The win helped USC in the first set of rankings released by the Bowl Championship Series, which is used to determine the two teams playing in college football’s national championship game.

The Trojans started off ranked fifth in the first BCS rankings of 2008. If USC finishes ranked either first or second in the BCS poll, the Trojans will play in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 8 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Kevin Craft

UCLA quarterback Kevin Craft engineered an 87-yard game-winning touchdown drive to lead the Bruins to a 23-20 victory over Stanford at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. Craft was 6-for-7 for 60 yards in the final drive, which started on the UCLA 13 yard line with 2:38 remaining in the game.

It was the second longest scoring drive of the game put together by Craft; he also marched the Bruins 88 yards downfield in the final 2:30 of the first half, resulting in a UCLA field goal. Craft completed 23 of 39 passes for 285 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
With the win, UCLA improved to 3-4 (2-2 in PAC-10), while Stanford is 4-4 (3-2).

WHO’S NOT?

Los Angeles Dodgers

Behind series MVP Cole Hamels, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Dodgers, 5-1, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Oct. 15. The Phillies won the series, four games to one, and advance to the World Series.

Not only did the loss dash any hopes of ending the team’s 20-year championship drought, it also meant the end for many players wearing Dodger Blue. About 12 players became free agents after the loss, including Manny Ramirez, Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra and Derek Lowe.

Anaheim Ducks Scoring Line

Anaheim lost five of its first six games, thanks in part to the non-production of its top scoring line of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Chris Kunitz. So far this season, the trio combined for no goals, two assists, a minus-seven rating and 35 penalty minutes. Last season, the line scored 74 goals and 186 points in 82 regular-season games.

Los Angeles Kings Fan Base

Despite winning games, fans are not turning out to watch Kings hockey. In its first two home games, reported attendance at Staples Center was 14,194 and 14,451, though the team’s television commentator stated that actual attendance was much lower. Season ticket renewal was at 81 percent this season, according to team officials.

David Beckham

The Houston Dynamo (13-5-11) eliminated the Los Angeles Galaxy (8-13-8) from playoff contention. It is the second straight season that the Galaxy missed the MLS playoffs since David Beckham arrived.

Beckham was a non-factor in the 3-0 loss against Houston Oct. 18. He did not play because of a suspension.
