After the past few weeks, fans are starting to wonder if this year truly is going to be a repeat of 2007. With two No. 1 ranked teams already losing (USC and Oklahoma) and upsets frequent, this year’s road to the BCS could be shockingly similar to the last.

However, this is an unprecedented year in college football. For the first time in BCS history, the top three teams in the initial BCS standings (Texas, Alabama and Penn State) all came from outside of the AP’s preseason top 10.

Texas secured its No. 1 spot after a commanding win over No. 11 Missouri and will most likely go to the national title game if they can win their remaining games. But Texas fans shouldn’t buy their tickets for Miami just yet, upcoming games against ranked rival Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State and Kansas will pose a threat to their title chances.

Alabama is also likely to head to the title game if they can finish their season undefeated … the strength of schedule in the SEC commonly thought to be stronger than No. 3 Penn State’s in the Big Ten.

Besides the top three undefeated teams, the BCS battle stems between the one-loss teams who will fight for the chance to slide into the title game. Oklahoma sitting at No. 4, and USC at No. 5 followed by No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Ohio State and No. 10 Florida.

Don’t get your heart set on these top three teams yet though, the road to the BCS title game is long and always changing. I assume the second half of this season will bring out a few more surprises. Stay tuned.
