Westwood can be a student’s paradise with all of the inexpensive food options throughout the Village. From pizza to shish kabobs, you won’t run out of new, exciting cuisines to try. A great option for Persian cuisine is the renowned Shamshiri Grill.

Since its inception 27 years ago, Shamshiri’s reputation of ample portions for next to nothing has been exceeded only by their fast and friendly service. The menu is loosely translated Mediterranean fare by way of Persia.

Appetizers like the Eggplant Borani, ($4.95) a dip infused with garlic and sautéed onions is similar to a Baba Ganoush, only with yogurt. Apart from fried calamari and shrimp, many of the appetizers are vegetarian or vegan, but the melding of ingredients like crispy rice topped with walnuts and pomegranate or fresh herbs with beans and a hint of lime ensure you don’t miss the “meat.”

Shamshiri has lighter fare for lunch Monday through Friday (11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.) for $7.95 … you choose from Falafels to Shawarmas to Kabobs served with rice, salad and hummus.

If it’s meat that you desire, rest assured Shamshiri has options. Poultry selections include rotisserie prepared Chicken Shawarma Platter with your choice of salad and served with hummus and rice ($12.95), or try your hand at a lamb dish like the Koobideh ($14.95), two broiled skewers seasoned with onions.

House Specials take your palate even further into Persia, Albalou Polo ($12.95), for instance, is a dish of cooked sour cherries with basmati rice, and you can chose your protein of chicken or lamb shank.

Shamshiri is perfect for large groups as well … the more guests, the more different items you can sample!
