Yumiko Kayukawa "49 Days": The paintings in Yumiko Kayukawa’s "49 Days" all carry a feeling of existing between life and death, and in these pieces, images of food and chopsticks can pertain to either. Massimo Vitali Opening Reception
Sat, Sep 11, 2010. M+B is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by internationally acclaimed artist Massimo Vitali. The exhibition opens September 11, 2010 and runs through October 16, 2010.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays. Thu, Sep 16, 2010-Sun, Nov 21, 2010. Opening reception: Thursday, September 16 | 6–9 pm. Coming out of a generation that witnessed the ramifications of the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Massacre and the landmark 1989 China/Avant-Garde exhibition and its subsequent closing by state authorities, Hangzhou-based artist Zhang Peili and Beijing-based artist Zhu Jia have used the medium of video and photography since the early 1990s to navigate the sea of changes in contemporary China. Although both earned degrees in oil painting, the radical departure between their training and practice and their consistent use of video as a medium for provocation, reflection and resonance becomes the impetus for this two-person exhibition. Their bodies of work begin with a position that poignantly challenges social mores, rampant development, authoritative politics and cultural values, and expand into more universal themes of the individual, time, and the loss of innocence and idealism. Zhang and Zhu present new works for REDCAT exhibited alongside past work, providing a focused, parallel examination of their respective practices. The exhibition is the first presentation of both artists’ work in Los Angeles. MORE >>

The event features a free all night open viewing of the art, an 8:30 pm Q&A with the artists and Peter Mays of the Los Angeles Arts Association, and a special raffle of an original piece of work designed by the three artists collectively for this event, plus many giveaways for all guests, including six free copies of Elizabeth Rosner’s new novel Blue Nude for the first six guests that bring a piece of artwork inspired by the title of the book.
To round out a night of exciting imagery and conversation, featured event sponsor Summerwood Winery of Paso Robles will pour a complimentary offering of their premium wines. Eclectic foods will be available for purchase on the premises. The lucky winner of the raffle will take home the unique masterpiece of the show, created by the three artists, and titled “Begin Again.” The artwork unites the artists’ respective talents - Mixed Media Pyrography, 3-D Household Art, and Literary Fiction.
